Therese Verner presents the exhibition “Visions of our world” in Poway

Thérèse Verner has a vision to share.
The artist, who is legally blind, will perform his show “Visions of Our World” at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts starting this weekend.
Verner, a self-taught artist, didn’t start painting until she was 30, when she lost much of her sight to macular degeneration and glaucoma.
“I still have enough to paint,” said Verner, who has no sight in his right eye and no peripheral vision in his left.
“I started quite late in life and decided I had to dive.”
This will be Verner’s second exhibition at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. She also had a solo exhibition in 2019. A free artist reception will be held on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. The exhibition will be presented from Saturday to the end of February.
Verner’s art offers an eclectic mix of subjects ranging from landscapes to abstracts to animals. Inspiration can come from a location or a photo, she said. Her pieces are acrylic and oil paint with mixed media.
“I like to do a lot of different things,” she said. “They all have a story.”

Other times Verner draws inspiration from certain hues, such as in a few of her more recent abstract works in which she used brushes and palate knives.
“I just had color combinations that I wanted to use,” she said. “A lot of times I just get inspired by colors.”
Verner lived in Poway in the 1990s and previously worked for GDE Systems in Rancho Bernardo. She now lives in Agua Dulce with a studio in the log home she shares with her husband, Bob Skerstonas.
She said the center contacted her to do another show.
“It’s very exciting,” she said. “It’s an amazing place. I said, “Oh my God, how am I going to fill this place?”
Verner will have around 60 plays at his show. About half of them are different from his last show in Poway. To help cover the walls, which include a 90-foot space upstairs, Verner will show three 4-by-5-foot paintings and three 3-by-4-foot paintings.
