Manifesta reveals artists for Prishtina 2022 iteration

The nomadic European biennial Manifesta has released a list of artists who will take part in this year’s version, which will be launched on July 22 in Prishtina, Kosovo, and will last one hundred days. It should be noted that almost half of the seventy-seven artists present are Kosovars, which reflects an attempt by the organizers to play on the local context of the event. Kosovar artists are generally underrepresented at fairs and biennials across the continent. Manifesta officials frequently hold the biennial – which was launched in 1994 by director Hedwig Fijen and has run thirteen to date – in cities that are not on the regular festival circuit. Previous editions have taken place in cities like Ljubljana, Slovenia; Marseille, France; and Limburg, Belgium. (A 2006 iteration that was to be held in Nicosia, Cyprus, was scrapped due to escalating tensions between curators and a city-run nonprofit that sponsored the exhibit). The next editions are planned for Barcelona (2024) and the German region of the Ruhr (2026).
The participants, a total of fifty-two individuals and twenty-five collectives representing thirty-two countries, will present their work in twenty-two places, including the Brick Factory, an industrial site; the Grand Hotel; the Grand Hammam, a public bath; Kino Rinia, a disused cinema; the Narrative Practice Center of the former Hivzi Sylejmani Library; and Zahir Pajaziti Square. Interventions will also take place throughout the city.
