GOWANDA – James F. Smith, 93 of Maltbie Rd. Died early Tuesday morning at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville.
He was born in Dayton, NY on April 6, 1929, the son of Jack and Violet (Walpool) Smith.
Jim worked in the kitchen of the former Peter Glue Glue Co. in Gowanda for many years. He has also worked as a professional painter for Horace Pantano and Barnes Brothers Painting (both companies in the Dunkirk/Fredonia region).
A U.S. Army veteran Jim served honorably in the Korean War with the 11th Airborne Division
Jim married the former Joyce Farley on July 8, 1950. Joyce died on November 4, 2014.
Survivors include his children: Susan (Neil) Zeestraten of Jamestown, James M. Smith of Gowanda, Cynthia (Kevin) Hornberger of Gowanda, Jody Matern of Destin, Florida, Katherine J. Smith of Ft. Worth Texas and Tammy (Brian) Danahey from San Antonio, TX. Jim is also survived by 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and his 64 year old wife Joyce Jim was predeceased by two brothers: Frank and Arthur Smith.
Both James and Joyce had a love for animals, if they have to, memorials can be made to an unkilled animal shelter or charity of their choice.
A private family burial service will be held on Monday, August 29, 2022 at Pine Hill Cemetery in Gowanda, NY
