The painting “Dance with us Asian angels again Pauline” is inspired by the parody song “I Don’t Like It” by Pauline Pantsdown and the video that accompanies the song.

FUNK music and hippie culture are huge influences in the work of local artist Sawtell Phil Simpson, whose exhibition opens at Sawtell Gallery from Friday 6 May.

The special exhibition is titled Love, Peace & Oneness Too.

Funky Phil, as he is known locally, has been seriously creating art for over seven years and has previously contributed to a community-run art program in Coffs Harbor called Visual Noise with abstract artist Rachel Komasari.

Phillip’s unique art pushes boundaries, has a bold color palette, is socially relevant, and is painted through the eyes of how he views our current climate.

Her inspirations come from the social and political world, splashed with a hippy sense of color.

“I am inspired by activist artists like Martin Sharp RIP, Kara Walker and Banksy.

“I love the hippie movement and George Clinton.

“I was inspired by the Funkadelic Parliament color show… check out his majestic ride out of a spaceship landing on stage on YouTube as Dr Funkenstein.

“I love his concept of welcoming everyone aboard the mothership (Earth).

“I could watch Soul Train on YouTube with Don Cornelius RIP for hours.

“A combination of hippie, funk and soul culture leads to loads of vibrant colors.

“I’ve done local comedy at events hosted by Ben Stevenson and there’s a lot of humor in my work.”

The opening night of Love, Peace & Oneness Too will take place tonight, Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m.

The event is hippie themed with music and food being served.

“I can promise that the opening night of my exhibition will certainly not be boring.

“Nobody’s going to walk away singing ‘I’m bored, I’m the bored president’ like Iggy Pop.

“I feel good when I paint and often do it to funky old music from Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic and modern funkateers – Brooklyn Funk Essentials is worth checking out.

“My favorite bassist is the very colorful character Bootsy Collins.

“I paint mainly in acrylics with mixed media and there will be ceramics involved in my exhibition.”

Love, Peace & Oneness Too will be exhibited at the Sawtell Art Gallery from May 6 to May 21.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

‘Saint Bob’ is inspired by Bob Hawke.

“Jennifer Mischief” is inspired by the wicked humor of Jennifer England, which is reflected in her art.
