Damien Hirst just can’t stop painting things for Drake
It’s been a few big weeks for Aubrey Drake Graham. His long-awaited sixth studio album Boy in love certified finally abandoned, and a huge nine The songs on the album are currently in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. To celebrate the accomplishment, British artist Damien Hirst, who created the album cover (as expected) with twelve pregnant emojis , gave Drake a pair of custom painted Air Force 1s. Naturally, they both posted the moment on Instagram.
In photos taken at the artist’s London studio, Drake looks visibly elated, smiling at the shoes, which are covered in abstract pops of green, orange and pink paint. On one sole, Hirst painted the words “For Drake ♥ Damien”; and on the other, “Big ♥ Brother!”
The Forces probably aren’t Drake’s first Hirst: in 2017, he took a quick video tour of the temporary Toronto spot he occupied before construction was completed on his mansion, and you can spot a footprint of the famous sculpture by the artist from 2007 For God’s sake, which included a human skull covered with 8,601 diamonds. Drizzy has long had a taste for top notch art, as evidenced by the “Toosie Slide” video from 18 months ago, which was shot inside the mansion and featured some Kaws figure sculptures and a Warhol Mao, as well as the original Nothing was the same album cover painted by Kadir Nelson.
As seems to be the case with everything in the Boy in love certified Era, there is a perhaps unrelated but nonetheless intriguing Kanye West element to this story: Shortly before Drake revealed his Hirst-made artwork in August, sleazy British tabloid The Sun claimed that Kanye had purchased a sculpture by Hirst, titled The incomplete truth, for $ 1.37 million. On Instagram, Ye posted and then deleted a photo of the artwork, showing a dove suspended mid-flight in a box of formaldehyde, evoking much of the Donda images until then, prompting fans to wonder if the piece would serve as a Dondathe cover of. (As we now know, Kanye opted for a simple black square instead.)
All covers aside, it looks like Drake is having an artistic moment. He shares a lot of Boy in love certified– visuals related to his grid lately, including an illustration by Italian comic book writer Milo Manara and a piece that Drake’s in-house artist Theo Skudra did in collaboration with, naturally, Virgil Abloh. What other Could Hirst paint for Drake? Our money is on one of Drake’s many Birkins, much like the painted George Condo bag Kanye gave Kim.
