Cugine’s Italian opens on Fridays. June 10 at Stamford’s Harbor Point
Stamford, Conn. – Cugine’s Italian will open on Friday, June 10 in the Harbor Point community of Stamford, at 121 Towne Street. The restaurant, from Stamford restaurateurs John and Morgan Nealon, will offer enticing and well-prepared Italian cuisine and crudos, paired with fine cocktails and a robust wine list.
“We are counting down the days to welcome our guests to this one-of-a-kind space in Fairfield County,” said John Nealon. “We worked to create a unique atmosphere with a dark green and gold color palette, dimmed antique crystal chandeliers to create mood lighting, black and white artwork and a curated music playlist. All of this creates a moody but cozy backdrop to our classic food and drink menus.
“We are delighted to share that Rick O’Connor will lead our kitchen as Executive Chef, as well as on the operations side as co-owner,” said Morgan Nealon. “He has worked hard to create a menu that focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients, including many favorites, but also many new dishes that we know you will enjoy! On the drinks side, I’ve drawn on my experience to craft a menu of refined yet familiar cocktails that will complement Chef Rick’s dishes.
The menu is a true reflection of Chef Rick’s experience with Italian cuisine, pasta and seafood, with entrees such as steamed clams with Calabrian chili butter, crostini with ricotta whipped cream and roasted grapes, and meatballs. Crudo offerings include tuna liver with shaved frozen liver, marinated and flambéed strawberries, uni with anchovy butter and brioche toast, and bay scallops with ceviche, watermelon and mint. Vegetable dishes to share include zucchini (grated raw and grilled with mint salsa verde), Brussels (Agrodolce honey, mint) and Mixed Mushrooms (garlic, thyme); a wide assortment of homemade pasta includes wild boar gnocchi, lumache (bay scallops, zucchini, guanciale), baby octopus puttanesca, ricotta cavatelli pesto and capellini al limone. Large plates such as Chicken Brick (taliata, arugula salad, parmesan shavings, balsamic), Grilled Langoustines (fennel and citrus salad, gremolata) and Small Shoulder Filet (potato-fontina croquettes, grilled lettuce, red wine juice, mashed cauliflower) will be followed by desserts such as Panna Cotta, Pistachio Cannoli and Tiramisu with fresh chocolate shavings. Creative pizzas will also be on offer, including clams and zucchini, beef fat, bresaola, arugula and parmesan slices, as well as charred chili pineapple, pepperoni and red onions.
Cocktail offerings pay homage to classic drink recipes, as well as classic and beloved restaurants, such as The Savoy (with bourbon, amaro, maraschino liqueur, orange), Balthazar (gin, Lillet, lemon, honey) and Copacabana (tequila, Campari, lemon, grapefruit soda). A dedicated martini menu includes Rainbow Room (vodka or gin, sherry, honey, salt), Page Six (pistachio espresso martini), and Jimmy Weston’s (vodka or gin, olive juice, pickled jalapeno, blue cheese). An extensive wine list is also available, offering bottles or wines by the glass.
“To round out our management team, Sawyer Machette, who is a familiar face on our team at The Lila Rose and Taco Daddy, will redirect his attention to Cugine to help oversee reception and day-to-day operations as managing partner,” added Morgan Nealon. .
The restaurant with more than 80 seats will be open from Friday to Sunday (Friday 5 p.m.-1:30 a.m., Saturday 11:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m. and Sunday 11:30 a.m.-closed). The restaurant is currently accepting reservations through OpenTable or by phone (203-276-9266).
